The Philadelphia Phillies secured the National League East title and concluded the 2024 season with the second-best record in Major League Baseball. However, their success was short-lived as they were eliminated by the New York Mets in the NL Division Series, prompting the team to reevaluate its roster. A significant overhaul is on the table, with the possibility of trading All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm being considered.
If the Phillies opt to move on from Bohm, they may look to bring in seasoned third baseman Alex Bregman from the Houston Astros. While this remains speculative, Bregman could be a reliable alternative at the hot corner. Renowned for his fitting swing at Citizens Bank Park, strong defense, and extensive postseason experience, he has garnered attention from analysts like Buster Olney on X.
Owner John Middleton has voiced his disappointment regarding the Phillies’ playoff showing. Bohm’s performance, in particular, fell short, as he went 1-for-13 during the Division Series and did not play in Game 2. Bregman, although slightly older at 31 years old when the upcoming season starts, brings with him two World Series championships that could enhance both his on-field performance and leadership in the locker room.
The Philadelphia Phillies may possibly replace Alec Bohm with Alex Bregman amid free agency activity
Regardless of the decision surrounding Bohm, the Phillies are actively targeting free agents this offseason. Their focus is on securing an outfielder and a high-quality reliever. Although the pitching staff was strong in the first half of the season, the bullpen’s inconsistencies have led the organization to seek significant reinforcements.
After their loss in the Division Series to the Mets, the Phillies opted to extend manager Rob Thomson’s contract for an additional year. This move suggests the franchise believes that the second-half struggles were mainly due to player performance, leading to Thomson’s retention through 2026.
Thomson, who stepped into the managerial role in 2022 after five years as bench coach, led the Phillies to the World Series in his first season at the helm and the Championship Series in 2023. Despite having the most successful regular season in 2024, his team faced a disappointing defeat, losing 3-1 in the NLDS.
Bohm represented the Phillies as one of three starting infielders at the All-Star Game. He recorded a .280/.332/.448 batting line in the season, amassing 44 doubles, 15 home runs, 97 RBIs, and a 3.0 WAR over 143 games. In comparison, Bregman put up a .260/.315/.453 line for the Astros, contributing 30 doubles, 26 home runs, 75 RBIs, and a 4.1 WAR in 145 games.
