Jordyn Dorsey, a guard for the North Carolina A&T Lady Aggies, stands out as a significant presence on campus. Her impressive gameplay and leadership underline the vital role of women’s sports, especially at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

In an exclusive interview with ClutchPoints, the native of Augusta, Georgia, discussed the hurdles she faced after joining NC A&T, as well as her aspirations for the Lady Aggies’ future.

Dorsey was recruited during the COVID-19 pandemic, making her choice of school particularly challenging. However, a virtual tour convinced her that NC A&T was the right fit for her.

“The fact that I felt this was where I wanted to be and where I wanted to grow and play, even without seeing it in person, showed me where my heart was,” she shared. “Being an Aggie feels great; the community here, being around people who look like you, it’s just a lot of love and support. Even as an alum, it’s a lifetime commitment.”

As part of a prestigious women’s basketball program led by the most successful coach in NC A&T history, Tarrell Robinson, Dorsey was eager to make an immediate impact, regardless of her position.

“I was recruited as a wing, but I played both positions because I wanted to contribute in any way I could,” she elaborated. “Transitioning was definitely a struggle, but the coaching staff always believed in me. It’s a different pace and gear as a point guard, and it has also enhanced my leadership skills.”

Since becoming an Aggie, Dorsey has earned First Team All-CAA honors, HBCU All-American recognition, and received multiple Player of the Week awards. She takes pride in her achievements and her role as an ambassador for HBCUs.

“It means a lot to be recognized for the impact I have on the game and to represent HBCUs,” she remarked. “There’s a lot of talent at the HBCU level that people might not know about, and I’m glad to be part of that.”

This past summer, Dorsey coordinated a youth basketball camp in her hometown of Augusta, Georgia, helping children aged 6-12 enhance their skills.

“I had a blast during the camp—I might have had more fun than the kids!” she admitted. “Being able to give back to the community and see the impact I made on the kids was great. I would definitely do it again.”

In terms of honing her skills, Dorsey emphasized her focus on improving her fitness and three-point shooting as key goals.

“I need to get in better shape and improve my three-point percentage,” she noted. “I’ll be able to impact the game more effectively when I’m not fatigued.”

Dorsey played a crucial role last season, starting every game for North Carolina A&T, tallying 455 points, 44 steals, 119 assists, and six blocks. The Lady Aggies advanced to the Super 16 round of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), where they were defeated by Troy University, 89-75. In that game, Dorsey scored 18 points, along with contributing four assists and five rebounds.

“Making the Super 16 showed what we’re capable of if we put in the work,” she stressed. “Our goal is to start and finish the season strong. We’ve come close in the past three seasons but ran out of gas. We need to give 110% from start to finish.”

As the new season approaches and new recruits acclimate, Dorsey is confident that the team is prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.

“It’s different playing here and building connections with new recruits,” she indicated. “We’re fast-tracking the process of learning how we do things and how well we perform.”

While the Lady Aggies have yet to unveil their full schedule, details regarding their non-conference games can be found on the team’s official website.
