The past season proved to be a triumphant chapter for Kelvin Sampson and the Houston Cougars, who achieved the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and reached the Sweet 16 before facing elimination. Although Jamal Shead has transitioned to the NBA, the Cougars are looking forward to a competitive lineup for the 2024-25 season. Recently, Houston enhanced its roster with the signing of Isiah Harwell, as reported by Joe Tipton at On3 Sports.
Isiah Harwell’s signing establishes him as the highest-rated recruit in the program’s history. A five-star prospect, he stands out among the top high school basketball talents in Utah. Harwell, a member of the class of 2025, is poised to conclude his senior year at the esteemed Wasatch Academy.
In a conversation with On3 Sports, Harwell shared that his choice to join the Cougars was largely influenced by the strong culture fostered by Coach Sampson within the program.
“I chose Houston because the culture fit. I feel like I can thrive and succeed there and I believe in Coach Sampson and his whole staff,” Harwell remarked. “Coach Sampson has a way with speaking that just makes me motivated and ready to play. He also has a lot of experience and knows what he’s looking for.”
Playing as a shooting guard, Harwell exhibits a strong confidence in handling the ball and making plays. While the Cougars will feature an experienced roster next season, Harwell could make a significant contribution right away.
Houston sets sights on another successful season
As the 2024 NCAA Tournament loomed, the Cougars were recognized as formidable contenders for the national title. However, their run was cut short in the Sweet 16 when standout guard Jamal Shead suffered an injury. Shead has since entered the NBA after being drafted by the Toronto Raptors. Nevertheless, Houston retains a talented and experienced roster.
Harwell won’t be the only notable high school recruit joining Houston in the coming season. He will be accompanied by Mercy Miller from Sherman Oaks Notre Dame High School in California and Chase McCarty from IMG Academy in Florida, both of whom are considered top-100 prospects.
Houston has successfully mitigated losses to the transfer portal, with only Damian Dunn transferring to Pittsburgh. To offset Shead’s exit, the Cougars have brought in point guard Milos Uzan from Oklahoma via the transfer portal.
Once again, L.J. Cryer will lead the team, having been the leading scorer for the Cougars last season. Furthermore, the anticipated return of Terrance Arceneaux, who was sidelined for most of the 2023-24 season due to an Achilles injury, is expected to significantly enhance the team’s performance.
